"My name is Sam Tyler. I Had an accident, and I woke up in 1973. Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's Happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home. "
I started watching Life on Mars almost by accident, I was attracted by the plot of Ashes to Ashes and only when I started look more carefully about it I found out it was only after a sort of Life on Mars. I saw the entire first series subbia in English due to the (thankfully) there are no subtitles in Italian. The second I saw it with eng sub, but are now back to eng sub, the translation was made in the wake of bad Italian adaptation of the first set and played really bad. When
I started it I did not know what to expect, the plot was tempting but at the same time could be reduced to a wreck. Instead I loved him infinitely. And not just because its 16 episodes in total is a series that is held up perfectly, but also because it was not anything that I had imagined from the simple plot. The science fiction element is almost zero, but its importance not just at the same time. Sam is clearly a man of the twentieth century catapulted in 1973, and it certainly can not go unnoticed. Above all, Sam is a person with ideals, the logic that make a fight (sometimes literally) with the mentality of the 70s. But not only that, Sam, regardless of the year of birth is a person, with its own strengths and weaknesses, and above all his personality that has little to do with the Gene which is the based on the story. The science fiction
pc, futuristic technology, the mystery is not here. The whole series is set in Manchester in 1973, in an idealized sense, it certainly can not think that was the real police in 1973, but at the same time is that police * * we think we want and therefore are unable to accept as likely without any problems.
The characters are undoubtedly the true and undoubted strength of this series. Sam Tayler is a perfect hero in every sense. That kind of character idealistic, loyal, generous, sweet, short, the prissy guy. Yet we will see all his faults without problems. I've adored, but because I love the characters idealistic, but I believe that Britain was all lined up, so to speak, with co-star Gene Hunt, a division of DCI in Manchester, for his subjects GOV . A man at the antipodes of Sammy-boy. Arrogant, violent, treacherous, arrogant and largely racist, and yet I adore. Forgive him because is nothing but a mirror of the times and in its irony because it is so bad and sour laugh. There are entire sites dedicated to his insults and his imaginative metaphors!
addition to the two main protagonists, there is a small group of secondary characters not only recently, all well marked, sometimes can seem like mere specks, but each of them is important and studied. Annie, the young policewoman who has studied psychology, cynical Phyllis always the right answer, the poor and embarrassed Chris, the bully bully Ray, until the legendary bartender philosopher Nelson! Other
particular are not secondary to the music, all pieces of famous British rock 60-70 years, apart from some rare exceptions. The very title of the series is taken from "Life on Mars?" By David Bowie, now I can not hear without thinking of the series finale.
The party, so to speak, crime series of cases is not complicated or absurd situations are all very "real", so rarely good bet lies in trying to track down the murderess before our own, but are environments and reactions that trigger the various cases in the group the important part.
From what I have described until now perhaps it may seem a very serious psychological, but it is not. Action is so short, Gene Hunt can not go without kicking someone for more than 10 minutes! And most importantly it is very ironic, which perhaps goes a bit 'into the background in the first episode, but then becomes more and more evident! There are several
leitmotif in the series: the phone, the TV constantly on (for the "you are asking for"), the Test Card Girl ... all things mostly related to Sam. In conclusion
Life on Mars is to look at, personally I love him to death. It has all those characteristics that make me fall in love with a story, there's that hint of mystery about the situation Sam's so much irony, characters and setting care and especially well chosen, a plot is not trivial and never forced, almost invisible to a touch of romance and realistic situations and not at all exaggerated.
Important Note: Never read the story of Ashes to Ashes, as I did before seeing Life on Mars. Somehow much of the final spoiler. In this regard, the end is in my opinion, fits perfectly, I had made dozens of hypotheses about it, and obviously none of them realized.
SPOILER
especially about the final. I have read a couple of assumptions, but I've always seen, regardless of which unfortunately I had read the plot of Ashes to Ashes, just as it has been demonstrated in the next series. That is when Sam Tayler was in a coma was, somehow, was also shifted in the past. Maybe Sam Williams was one of his doubles, and died in the incident in which he took "possession" of the body. But certainly that is the real 1973 and he is Sam Tayler was born in 1969 and has had an accident in 2006. And the fact that it jumped back to for years, well it is simply amazing! I'll sometimes too romantic, but it takes some romantic place! Sam had nothing in 2006, the family was only his mother, who was sure the same well, friends are non-existent entity, the Maya left. In 1973 however has friends, strange, which fought constantly, but somehow I kind of family, and above all Annie.
And I think that Gene and Annie had told the truth, hoping at least we have tried to be believed. Also because otherwise difficult to explain the complete restoration of the finale.
favorite spot on all the 2.5, renamed "Flippatissimo" XD When Sam is in Od's is adorable. A party who has the reactions from The Master, however, everything is adorable. And there's that scene end with sweet Annie. And Chris like that usually takes it all too literally. I liked the choice filmmaking, with all those flashbacks, it's television as a means of semi-coma Sam to follow all the events, in short, just a beautiful episode.
on Annie and Sam, their love story is handled beautifully, you take and get lost in a moment, but because they are too light touch, both frightened by the situation and shy. There is depth and feeling, but there's no use soap industry, just think that we have to wait for a blessed kiss the last part of last bet, but so is even more rewarding **_**
